Back to What's New?!

October 2009

Welcome to the “What’s New?!” page for Books for a Better World!

This is a new section for updating everyone on what is going on with Books for a Better World both in the States and in Central and South America.

Upon approaching our ten year anniversary mark, Books for a Better World has undergone many changes when looking back.  Some of these changes have been sad, difficult, exciting, and wonderful.  Even with changes in volunteers, countries, libraries, governments, in-country and U.S. staff, maintaining Kae Robb’s vision of establishing libraries in rural areas and awakening imagination through reading colorful and beautifully illustrated books has been the at the core of our work and continues to be our mission.

Kae once said that she saw in the children of Central America as “honest politicians, wonderful mothers and fathers, innovative engineers, and engaging teachers” and that these bright futures began with the opening of a storybook, in which the mind could grow and develop.

This legacy has continued to shine brightly in eight Central and South American countries in over 70 sites. Hundreds of children and adolescents are taking the opportunity to read books about marine life, the human body, animals, myths, and legends.  Just this last year, a loan system was established. Imagine taking home a new book to read and share with family and friends!

Maybe you are just getting to know our projects. Maybe you have known about Books for a Better World for years. Whatever your familiarity level with Books for a Better World, we would like to personally take this opportunity to invite you to experience Books for a Better World and learn of our involvement in community and school based reading programs and libraries.  ¡Bienvenidos a todos!
