Background

A life filled with books is one enriched by the beauty of language and the excitement of ideas. It is the exchange of ideas and experiences that expands the mind and the imagination. People who read tend to think globally and be more tolerant. People who read are more likely to be more creative and more socially active. People who read are more likely to be able to understand the consequences of their actions and feel empowered to make contributions to create a better economic and social environment.

Founded in 2000 by Kae Robb, a middle school Spanish teacher, Books for a Better World is a non-profit, educational organization. Even as a small child Kae had a passion for books and for travel.  When Kae read to children who had never been read to before,Open air classroom she knew she was changing the world. When she shared with them her passion for books and talked with them about how it opened the doors to new and exciting places and people, Kae knew she was changing the world.  When a child finished a book and enthusiastically retold the story to another, she knew that she was changing the world.  Her interest in literacy in developing countries seemed quite natural.  Kae’s goal was to provide opportunities to children without access to books.  Through their acquaintance with literature, she helped them expand their imaginations and experience the sheer joy of discovery and the beauty of language. She hoped to inspire and empower children to develop to the highest level to which they are capable.

Books for a Better World partners with schools in our host countries to create libraries or to add to existing collections in community centers and libraries in rural areas.  Language development and vocabulary building are emphasized through the use of the charming, imaginative stories and legends from all parts of the world.  Most books have dynamic, colorful illustrations that delight the eye, hold one's interest and offer valuable clues to new vocabulary.  The books are in the native language of the area.  Recent shipments of books included Dr. Suess’ Horton Hears a Who and the Harry Potter series.
